Care & Maintenance

Investing in a pergola enhances the value and aesthetics of your outdoor space. Proper care and maintenance ensure its longevity and functionality across all seasons. Below is a comprehensive guide to help you maintain your pergola in optimal condition.

Regular Inspections

· Frequency: Conduct inspections several times a year.

· Structural Check: Examine seams, joints, and tracks for signs of wear, rust, or corrosion. Addressing these issues promptly maintains the structural integrity.

· Motor Maintenance: If your pergola is motorised, ensure the motor remains free from dust and debris to function efficiently.

· Debris Removal: Clear accumulated debris such as twigs and leaves, especially from roof slats, to prevent operational hindrances.

· Vegetation Control: Trim nearby vines and bushes to prevent potential damage to the pergola structure.

Cleaning Procedures

· Initial Rinse: Use a hose or bucket to remove loose dirt from the pergola's surface.

· Gutter and Slat Cleaning: Inspect and clear gutters and roof slats of dirt buildup, then flush with water to ensure thorough cleaning.

· Mild Detergent Wash: Prepare a solution of warm water mixed with a small amount of mild detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals that can strip protective coatings.

· Gentle Scrubbing: Using a soft-bristled brush or sponge, gently clean the structure following the grain to prevent scratches.

· Thorough Rinse: After cleaning, rinse all soap residues with clean water.

· Drying: Wipe down the pergola with a microfiber cloth or towel to prevent water spots and streaks.

Cleaning Frequency Based on Environment

· Urban Areas: Clean every three months.

· Rural Areas: Clean every six months.

· Industrial and Marine Environments (within 1 km of the sea): Perform monthly cold-water washes and biannual warm-water washes with detergent.

Accessory Maintenance

· Privacy Screens: Wipe visible dirt with a damp sponge. Avoid harsh chemicals to prevent material damage. Allow to air dry after cleaning.

· Shutter, Slatted, or Patterned Walls: Clean with warm soapy water and a cloth, rinse with clean water, and let air dry.

· Glass Walls and Doors: Use a glass cleaner and microfiber cloth to remove marks and dirt.

· Sliding Doors: Regularly inspect tracks to prevent dust and dirt buildup; use a handheld vacuum if necessary.

Retractable Shade Blinds Usage

· Storage Position: Keep retractable shade blinds open when not in use.

· Wind Protection: Leaving blinds down during high winds can cause damage, which may not be covered under repair warranties.

By adhering to these maintenance practices, your pergola will remain in excellent condition, providing lasting value and enjoyment to your outdoor space.

Do I usually need council approval to build a pergola in Australia?

Yes, in most locations across Australia, obtaining council approval is often required before building a pergola, particularly if it exceeds certain size limits (commonly around 10 square meters). Regulations vary between states and individual local councils, so it’s important to confirm the specific rules that apply in your area. Key considerations typically include the pergola’s height, total floor area, proximity to property boundaries, and how it impacts stormwater drainage. We can provide engineering documentation to support your application and help streamline the approval process.

Why this matters to you

Use it more often. Tilt the louvres open for airflow and filtered sun; close them for solid overhead coverage when the weather flips. No “move everything inside” scramble.

Stay comfortable. Create shade at school-pickup time, or open for the golden hour. You’re in control of glare, heat and wind.

Keep things dry. When shut, the roof forms a protective barrier so you can grill, read, host—or let the dog snooze—without watching the radar all day.

Looks sorted, year-round. Clean, architectural lines that lift your deck, pavers or pool area (and your home’s street appeal).

Choose your size by how you’ll live in it

3 × 3 m — A café-style nook: two lounge chairs + side table; perfect for compact courtyards or a “coffee corner.
4 × 3 m — The family zone: a 6-seater dining set or outdoor sofa + BBQ space. The most popular “do-more” footprint.
4 × 6 m — Host mode: long dining table and lounge area; creates a true second living room outdoors.

Colours that actually match homes: Black, White, Charcoal—pair with modern brick, render, or timber tones.

What you’ll feel day-to-day (benefits over specs)

Flip-of-the-wrist control. Manual crank = simple, reliable, no wiring. If you can open a window, you can run this.
Shade without cave-dark. Angled blades filter light so you can read a menu or homework pages at midday.
Dry when closed. Keep cushions out, set the table, and stop guessing the weather. (Customers call this the “we didn’t have to move” moment.)
Clean look, clean upkeep. Smooth aluminium surfaces wipe down fast after dust or gum leaves.

Real-world value you can see
  • Upgrade the lifestyle, not the mortgage. Many homeowners compare this favourably to a solid roof build quoted at far higher cost, yet they still get the usable, styled space they wanted.

  • Year-round return. Breakfast sun, summer shade, dry dinners—more moments outside = more value from the square metres you already own.
DIY or installed—both feel doable

DIY-friendly kit. Clearly labelled parts and step-by-step instructions mean two capable people can assemble it over an afternoon. If flat-packs don’t scare you, neither will this. (Buyers consistently mention the straightforward build and good fit.)

Prefer pro help? We connect you with local installers for a neat, warrantable finish.

Works anywhere you actually put it

Decks & patios — Creates a defined room over composite decking or pavers.

Poolside — Shade for loungers; close blades after a swim to stop drips from turning the table wet. (A spa owner specifically praised “didn’t get dripped on”.)

Garden courtyards — Add privacy and a destination point between house and fence.
